Sinsot – The Dowry

Hi,

One of the things that I know many Western men are confused about is Sinsot.  Otherwise known as a Dowry.

Paying Sinsot

Sinsot will generally be Expected

Let me say one thing first OK?  Get over it!  Paying sinsot to the bride’s parents is part of Thai culture.  You are not being ‘ripped off’, or tricked in some way.  Sure it might seem a little strange and outdated to many in Western cultures, but it is ‘their’ culture, so please respect it and ‘get with the program’ 🙂

It will be expected.  And you will pay it.  The consequences are; losing the respect of her family and your wife.  In fact if she has any sense she will probably not marry you as it would be a gross display of cultural insensitivity…… and merely an indication that other ‘issues’ probably lie ahead.

So the next question, is how much to pay?  that’s tricky.  You see the payment of Sinsot is just as much a ‘face’ thing.  Too little and you look cheap.  Too much and you look flashy.

I took the easy way out.  Pat asked her Mum what was a fair amount 🙂  You see the sinsot is handed over during the wedding ceremony, so everyone gets to see the size of the ‘pile’ of bank notes!

So Mum was very fair.  And suggested an amount that showed I was serious and respectful but not ‘over the top’.  And in fact she offered to give it back to us after the ceremony to help pay for the Honeymoon !   We let her keep it though as we thought she needed it more than us….

Sneaky Mum used it to buy me a Gold Chain.  Plus she paid for the whole wedding ceremony…..

Mind you, the cost of marrying a Thai Lady can be a lot more than the Sinsot…………….more on that in another post 🙂

Here is a handy link that talks about ‘Bride Price’ or Dowry in a range of countries, including Thailand: Bride Price

  1. I’m sorry but I think this is an outdated concept in the 21st centuary and I’m surprised that men put up with it!

    • Hi Steve, Yes I know many Western men struggle with the concept of Sinsot. It seems to be a topic of hot debate sometimes. But the bottom line is this. It is an accepted part of Thai culture and most Thai women would expect their bridegroom to pay it. If you honestly object to the idea, that is fine, we all have our views and opinions. But it may a) make it harder for you to find a Thai wife and b) cause a major issue with your Thai partner. I just take the view that it ‘goes with the territory’, and is part of marrying into Thai culture and a Thai family. Just like helping to support your wife’s family if required…. (I’ll write more on that another day).

P.S. Many people say when you marry a Thai girl, you are marrying her family too. To a large extent that is true. You become part of the family and are expected to help out sometimes just any other member of the family.

  2. I found the concept a bit hard to understand at first, like many ‘farang’ men, but as you say Robert, it’s all part of the culture and if you want to marry a Thai girl, then ‘get with the program’ buddy….
